The body (in chickens, humans, any animal) decreases blood flow to the extremities in cold conditions in order to prioritize heat to vital organs. WebFrostbite is when the water in the chicken’s body tissue freezes. Blood cannot travel to the area and causes the tissue to die. Once the tissue has died it turns white or black. How do you keep chickens from getting frostbite? Avoiding frostbite and reducing its threat on your flock is best done with a few preventative measures in winter.
